CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Ross County has recorded 22 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis since mid-June, according to an update the Ross County Health District posted July 24.
The health district said the cases were confirmed between June 17 and July 24 as part of an ongoing multistate investigation into the parasitic intestinal illness.
The update follows a mid-July alert from the Portsmouth City Health Department, which urged residents to wash fresh produce carefully as cyclosporiasis cases tied to produce climbed across the country.
On July 19, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported that a lettuce sample connected to a nationwide Taco Bell and Taylor Farms lettuce outbreak, which had initially tested positive for Cyclospora, was retested and found to be a false positive. Health officials said there are currently no confirmed positive test results tied to Cyclospora in that investigation, according to the health district.
Despite the retracted test result, the health district cautioned that the broader outbreak investigation remains ongoing and said it will continue tracking local case counts and posting updates as they become available.
