HILLSBORO, Ohio — U.S. Route 62 was shut down in both directions near Warlamount Road on Thursday morning after a crash involving a semi truck left a large fuel spill on the roadway, according to the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said in a post that the closure covers both directions of travel in the area and urged drivers to avoid the stretch of highway entirely while crews work to clear the scene.
“Please avoid the area and plan appropriately for travel purposes,” the sheriff’s office said.
The closure sits along a rural two-lane section of US 62 that connects Hillsboro to smaller Highland County communities before the highway continues north toward Fayette County. The sheriff’s office did not immediately release information on injuries, the extent of the fuel spill or how long the closure is expected to last.
Large fuel spills from commercial trucks typically require a hazardous-materials response and cleanup crew in addition to law enforcement and towing, which can keep a roadway closed for an extended period while crews contain the spill and assess the pavement.
Drivers in the area should expect delays and seek an alternate route until the sheriff’s office announces the highway has reopened.
