FRANKLIN FURNACE, Ohio — The Scioto County Health Department will host a two-day tire cleanup event later this month, giving residents a free way to get rid of old tires that can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The 2026 Tire Cleanup Event runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 22 and 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 23 at the New Green Township garage in the 500 block of Jr. Powellsville Road in Franklin Furnace, according to the health department.
Residents dropping off tires must follow state law. Ohio Revised Code 3734.83 prohibits hauling more than 10 scrap tires at a time, the health department said. Tires must also be removed from their rims before drop-off; rims will not be accepted at the event.
The cleanup is funded by the Scioto County Health Department and the 2026-2027 Ohio EPA Mosquito Control Grant, a program the state agency runs jointly with the Ohio Department of Health. The grant program, in place since 2016, helps local health departments and municipalities pay for mosquito surveillance and larval control and for clearing out scrap tire piles, which collect rainwater and serve as prime breeding sites for mosquitoes that can spread diseases such as West Nile virus.
