COLUMBUS, Ohio – As Ohioans grapple with the aftermath of last week’s devastating storms, state officials are urging residents to prioritize safety during Severe Weather Awareness Week (March 17-23).

The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of State Fire Marshal and Manufactured Homes Program is highlighting the heightened vulnerability of manufactured homes during these events. Last week’s storms caused significant damage to mobile home parks in Logan County, Mercer County, Preble County, Darke County, and others.

“The horrific tornadoes we witnessed last week underscore the importance of being prepared for severe weather,” said Governor Mike DeWine. He encouraged residents to review and practice emergency plans throughout the year, with Severe Weather Awareness Week serving as a valuable reminder.

The National Weather Service reports that 72% of tornado-related deaths in the U.S. involve individuals inside homes, with manufactured housing disproportionately impacted. Residents in manufactured homes are 15-20 times more likely to die compared to those in permanent structures.

State Fire Marshal Chief Deputy Richard Sluder emphasized the importance of proactive measures like creating emergency plans. “Severe weather can strike anywhere, anytime,” Sluder said. “Preparation is key, not waiting until a storm is imminent.”

Residents whose homes were damaged are urged to contact local safety officials and insurance companies for guidance on repairs. Manufactured homes that have shifted from their foundations cannot be reoccupied until re-installed with a permit and safety inspections are passed. Information on this process is available on the Manufactured Homes Program website.

Residents returning to damaged mobile home parks should be aware of potential hazards like exposed utilities and debris. Following instructions from local authorities and park operators is crucial for ensuring safety.

The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Manufactured Homes Program oversees the safe installation and maintenance of manufactured homes, licensing of industry professionals, and certification of inspectors.
