CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Local businesses in downtown Chillicothe are voicing concerns over upcoming road projects on West Water Street, which include constructing two roundabouts—one at the entrance to Yoctangee Park and another at the intersection of W. Water and Walnut Street.

On social media, the owners of Ivy’s, a well-known local establishment, expressed their worries. They stated, “Roundabouts on Water Street? Ivy’s Family, Downtown Businesses & Community Members – Our Downtown Needs to Hear From You!”

Ivy’s post highlighted the potential impacts of the construction: “These roundabouts will eliminate vital parking spaces and likely shut down Water Street for over six months. This will severely disrupt customer access, employee commutes and business operations, threatening the survival of local businesses and the jobs they provide.”

The post continued to emphasize the stakes for the community, noting, “Our historic downtown is still recovering from economic hardships and prolonged construction could force permanent closures. Losing these businesses would not only impact local jobs but also diminish the heart of our community.”

With a City Council Public Review Session scheduled to gather feedback on the project, Ivy’s urged community involvement. “We Need Your Help! Council chambers are small, so we cannot have all of you attend the review session with us, but PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL to share your concerns to [email protected] by Friday, March 7th… if you are part of our Ivy’s Family please copy [email protected] on your email… and let them know how these changes would impact you and your ability to support downtown Chillicothe.”

The call to action ended with a plea to the community: “Share this post widely to protect our downtown. Downtown thrives because of YOU… our Ivy’s Family, supporters and community members. Together, let’s preserve the heart of our city.”

The roundabouts are intended as part of the city’s efforts to redevelop Yoctangee Park and enhance the area along West Water Street. However, the local businesses anticipate that the construction could have long-lasting negative effects on their operations and the broader community.
