An inmate is dead and two guards are injured after a scuffle at a prison in Pickaway County.

It happened Saturday in Orient at the state’s Correctional Receiving Center where newly admitted state prisoners are processed.

The department said two female officers were trying to remove a combative inmate from his cell when a scuffle broke out between the three. The officers suffered serious injuries during the fight. Both women were taken to the hospital with one officer being treated and released; the other officer is still being treated but is in stable condition.

The inmate declined a medical evaluation in the infirmary and collapsed shortly thereafter, according to a media release from the state. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating.

The inmate’s name has not been released.
