Charles Robin Newland, Sr., age 79, of Leesburg, passed away early Saturday morning July 17, 2021, at the Kindred Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He was born on April 23, 1942, in Sabina, Ohio, the son of the late Donald E. and Naomi (Payne) Newland. Charles was a 1960 graduate from Fairfield High School, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University, and a master’s degree in education from the University of North Florida. Charles taught mathematics for several years at East Clinton and Washington Court House Schools, and was also a school administrator in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Charles’s first love was for farming which he enjoyed for 35 years and was a dairy farmer for 5 years and a swine farmer for 5 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he worked as an Aviation Officer, and after 25 years of service he retired as a Lieutenant Commander. Charles was a member of the Leesburg Lions Club, and he had a passion for the Lions Quest youth program. He was proud to be part of and help establish the Liberty Lions Club, Mowrystown Lions Club, Blanchester Lions Club, and the Paint Valley Lions Club. He was a Lions Lion and served in several positions in the District and twice as a District Governor. He was a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church. His favorite saying was, “I’m still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up.” Charles loved spending time with his family, and he will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jeannette “Jay” Newland, whom he married on August 22, 1964; four children, Corrinne Newland Ball of Silsbee, Texas, Charles Robin “Rob” (Theresa) Newland, Jr of Leesburg, Christopher Newland of Leesburg, and Richenda Lee Newland of Leesburg; ten grandchildren, J.R., Josh, Jon, Megan, Taylor, Andrew, Selina, David, Jaden, and Ethan; five great grandchildren, Jaydn, Bentlee, Vanna Jo, Violet, and Adalynn; a brother, D. William “Bill” (Karen) Newland and several nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce Newland, Ramona Newland, and a brother, Lawrence Michael Newland. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday July 24, 2021, at the United Methodist Church in East Monroe. Lions Club services will begin following visitation at 1:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service. Jeff Davis will be officiating. Burial, with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, will take place following services in the Highland Cemetery.
