CHILLICOTHE, Ohio— A local non-profit organization aims to raise awareness regarding veteran suicide by hosting a Ruck 22 event in Chillicothe.
First Capital Ruck 22 is a 501c3 created by local veterans. The group holds community awareness events while supporting organizations that provide direct support to veterans and their families.
The inaugural event takes place this October in Yoctangee Park and will feature a 22km march, two separate 5km walks, and a “22 steps of reflection”. Food vendors will also be present for the event, and representatives from the V.A. will be passing out literature and free gun locks. Members of the local Army unit, will be on hand to distribute water to participants.
Following the march there will be a free concert by country music recording artist Ryan Daniel.
The Guardian asked First Capital Ruck 22, President Ed Kirker, about what inspired his organization to create this event, “This crisis is devastating not only to the country but has hit the Scioto Valley extremely hard. We have found out that most people in the area have lost someone that was a vet to suicide. It truly has made a negative impact on this community, as I am sure it has across the country. This is a quiet crisis that no one is talking about.”
The event will begin at 6 p.m. on October 15. The cost will be $22. Organizers say that all proceeds from the event will be donated to organizations to raise awareness and help prevent suicide.
