ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio —Former Nelsonville Recreation Director David “Rudy” Schultz has been indicted on two counts of theft for allegedly stealing money intended to support youth baseball and softball leagues during the 2022 season.
Schultz is accused of failing to deposit money collected from registration fees and concession sales, taking money out of an account for improper use, and taking over $2,500 from fundraising efforts of Batting for Kids after leaving his job.
Schultz will be arraigned in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas on Wednesday.
Athens County Prosecuting Attorney, Keller J. Blackburn, expressed disappointment in the theft of funds designed to better children’s experiences and urged organizations and local governments to implement safeguards to prevent future thefts.
The investigation began in February 2023 after Nelsonville City Auditor Taylor Sappington reported improprieties with a donation to Batting for Kids.
