WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) announced the arrest of a staggering 73,362 fugitives in fiscal year 2023, averaging nearly 300 arrests per day. This marks a significant achievement in the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and ensure public safety.
“The Justice Department is laser-focused on driving down violent crime, and the U.S. Marshals Service plays a crucial role in this mission,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco. “By strategically targeting the most dangerous fugitives, particularly those in high-crime areas, the Marshals are making a tangible difference in communities across the nation.”
The breakdown of arrested fugitives reveals a specific focus on individuals associated with violent crimes and endangering the vulnerable. Over 10,000 sex offenders were apprehended, along with 5,447 homicide suspects and 3,496 gang members. The USMS also successfully captured 1,487 international fugitives and dismantled drug trafficking networks by arresting 1,051 individuals associated with Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigations.
“I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and skill demonstrated by our Marshals,” said USMS Director Ronald Davis. “Their relentless pursuit of justice, coupled with the invaluable support from our state, local, and federal partners, has undoubtedly made our communities safer.”
The agency’s success extends beyond individual arrests. The USMS cleared a total of 86,388 warrants in FY 2023, including both state and local warrants (57,280) and federal warrants (29,108). Additionally, over 4,731 firearms were seized during violence reduction and counter-gang operations, potentially preventing future tragedies.
