ATHENS, Ohio — The Athens County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers to prioritize their safety by checking for open recalls on their vehicles during Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, March 4th to 10th, 2024. This annual initiative coincides with the start of Daylight Saving Time, serving as a timely reminder to check your vehicle’s health before hitting the road.
Why Check for Recalls?
In 2022 alone, over 1,050 safety recalls impacted more than 31 million vehicles and automotive equipment nationwide. These recalls often address critical safety issues, and neglecting them can put you and others at risk.
Checking for Recalls is Easy:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers two free and convenient ways to check if your vehicle is subject to an open recall:
- NHTSA VIN Look-Up Tool (NHTSA.gov/recalls): Simply enter your vehicle’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the website. The tool will instantly reveal any open safety recalls specific to your car, as well as provide details and potential remedies. Additionally, you can sign up for email alerts to stay informed about future recalls affecting your vehicle.
- SaferCar App (iOS and Android): Download and install the free SaferCar app. Enter your vehicle’s VIN and receive notifications directly if a safety recall is issued. Think of it as a virtual garage for all your vehicles and equipment – car seats, tires, trailers, you name it! SaferCar keeps you informed and even helps you schedule repair appointments with local dealerships, ensuring a quick and free fix.
Remember: Checking your VIN is crucial for both methods. You can find your VIN on the driver’s side of your car’s windshield or on your registration and insurance cards.
Stay Vigilant, Stay Safe:
While Vehicle Safety Recalls Week is a prime time to check for recalls, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office encourages drivers to be proactive year-round. Utilize the free resources offered by the NHTSA and make safety a top priority. Ignoring recalls can have severe consequences, including contributing to the ongoing nationwide air bag recall, the largest in U.S. history with 27 lives tragically lost.
If you suspect a safety issue in your vehicle that isn’t covered by a current recall, report it to NHTSA online at NHTSA.gov or by calling the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236. Your vigilance could prevent potential harm and save lives.
