WAVERLY, Ohio — Following the devastating downtown fire in Waverly that displaced families and caused significant damage to neighboring buildings, officials from the Waverly Fire Department have provided new details into the overnight blaze.
Reports indicate that an officer with the Waverly Police Department first noticed the flames emanating from a commercial building along Market Street. Responding to the scene, multiple units from the fire department arrived to find flames engulfing an apartment above Perry Glass in the 100 block of West North Street.
Firefighters were able to evacuate several individuals from the affected structure and nearby buildings before the fire could further spread.
Among the businesses impacted by the blaze were the public library, Perry Glass, Denny’s Doghouse, and Jessica’s Attic. While authorities conducted assessments of the damage, the library remained closed today.
Two individuals, authorities say, sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the fire and were subsequently transported to Adena Pike Medical Center for treatment.
At present, the fire is under investigation by the state’s Fire Marshal’s Office. Currently, West North Street remains closed to traffic.
