CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee — Get ready for the “day the moon wins” with MoonPie! The iconic marshmallow treat is celebrating the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th with a special, limited-edition release: Solar Eclipse Survival Kits.
These blackout boxes, featuring chocolate, vanilla, or banana mini MoonPies, are a must-have for eclipse watch parties, especially in the path of totality where the moon completely blocks the sun. MoonPie is capitalizing on its viral success during the 2017 eclipse, aiming to make this year’s celebration even bigger.
“The 2017 eclipse was huge for MoonPie, but we knew we had to take it up a notch,” said Tory Johnston, vice president of sales and marketing at Chattanooga Bakery, Inc. “This is the day the moon wins, and the sun goes dark! We wanted to create something that gets people as excited as we are.”
MoonPie’s enthusiasm extends beyond limited-edition snacks. A new social media video campaign features the Sun and Moon in a spoofed professional wrestling match called “Sun vs. Moon ’24: Brutality in the Totality.” This playful video depicts a cosmic rematch billions of years in the making.
This “Brutality vs. Totality” campaign follows MoonPie’s recent “Alien Acquisition” effort, where they became the first brand to advertise directly to extraterrestrials. They partnered with experts to create an alien-specific ad campaign in a language only they can understand.
The total solar eclipse will occur on April 8th, traversing North America across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. This is a rare event, with the next total eclipse visible from the contiguous United States not happening until 2044.
Limited-edition MoonPie Solar Eclipse Survival Kits are available for a limited time at Dollar Tree, participating Walmart stores, select grocery stores, and online at moonpie.com.
