LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Orenthal James “O.J.” Simpson, the disgraced football legend acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 76.
His death was announced on his Twitter account, which stated, “Our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren…” The statement asked for privacy for the family.
Simpson became a household name for his record-breaking football career. After retirement, he appeared in movies and became a ubiquitous figure in pop culture. His life took a dark turn in 1994 when he was charged with the murders of Brown Simpson and Goldman. The ensuing trial and his eventual acquittal captivated the nation.
