NEW ALBANY, Ohio — One person was killed and five others were hospitalized following an active shooter incident at a warehouse in New Albany on Tuesday night, Police Chief Greg Jones reported.
The incident took place at the KDC/One facility located at 8825 Smiths Mill Road North around 10:20 p.m., with approximately 150 people inside at the time. The warehouse is an affiliate of Bath and Body Works and makes hand sanitizer.
The conditions of the hospitalized victims were not immediately disclosed. Three of the injured are being treated at Mount Carmel East Hospital, according to a spokesperson.
Chief Jones stated that police have identified a person of interest who remains at large. It is unclear whether this individual is connected to the warehouse as an employee. No motive has been established, but the attack appears to have been targeted. The person of interest’s identity has not been released.
“This has been a very tragic situation. Our thoughts go out to the victims, their families, and everybody that works at this facility,” Jones said, adding, “This is something that we hoped would never happen in our community, but we prepare for it, and this is where we are now.”
A firearm was recovered at the scene, according to Jones.
Smiths Mill Road North is currently closed, and the public is advised to avoid the area.
