DAYTON, Ohio — Rumpke Waste & Recycling marked Earth Day on Wednesday by outlining its recycling services and encouraging residents to review what materials can be diverted from landfills.

The company said spring weather typically brings more people outdoors and serves as a reminder of the annual environmental observance. Earth Day, celebrated each April 22, focuses on sustainability and conservation.

Rumpke, an Ohio‑based waste and recycling provider, works with municipalities and community organizations to expand access to recycling through curbside carts and drop‑off locations. The company said its list of acceptable items has grown over time as technology has improved and participation has increased.

According to Rumpke, acceptable materials include “plastic bottles, jugs, tubs and cups; aluminum, steel and tin cans; glass bottles and jars; [and] loose leaf paper, cardboard and paperboard.”

Recyclables collected in the Dayton region are processed at Rumpke’s material recovery facility on East Monument Avenue before being transported to larger facilities in Columbus or Cincinnati for additional sorting.

Rumpke said it offers public tours of its facilities and provides recycling information on its website, social media platforms, and YouTube page.

In a statement, the company urged residents to consider the recyclability of everyday purchases. “On this Earth Day, we ask you to take an extra second when you’re at the store or at home, and question if what you’re purchasing is recyclable,” the company said. “If you’re deciding between the paper egg carton or the Styrofoam one, choose the paper. Plastic bags or paper bags? How about paper – or bring your own!”

Rumpke said recycling helps reduce the amount of material sent to landfills and supports broader sustainability efforts.
