WILMINGTON, Ohio — With creeks still running high and the ground saturated from days of heavy rain, the National Weather Service is warning that another round of showers and thunderstorms could bring locally heavy rainfall and additional flooding to the region on Wednesday.
According to a Tuesday advisory from the NWS Wilmington office, showers and thunderstorms will develop late tonight and continue into Wednesday morning. Conditions will be favorable for locally heavy rainfall, and storms could repeatedly move over the same location — a setup that can quickly overwhelm already-saturated drainage systems.
The NWS warned that with recent rainfall across much of the area, any location that sees heavy rain could experience flooding.
Southern and central Ohio have seen repeated rounds of heavy rain in recent weeks, with roads washing out, culverts failing, and rivers cresting above flood stage across multiple counties. Whaleytown Road in Jackson County was closed on Tuesday after a culvert washed out. The Scioto River at Circleville and Piketon remains in minor flood stage.
Residents should monitor local alerts closely through Wednesday and avoid crossing any water-covered roadways. Even a small amount of fast-moving water can push a vehicle off the road.
