WAVERLY, Ohio — The Pike Heritage Foundation will host its annual Pike Heritage Day on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. along South Market Street in Waverly’s Old Canal District, the Waverly Police Department announced in a Facebook post promoting the event.
The daylong festival will feature artisans, crafters and local shops, along with live music and a performance of a piano solo by Friedrich Guth, according to the event flyer shared by police. Visitors will be able to tour the Pike Heritage Museum, enter a raffle basket drawing and shop with local vendors.
Schmidt’s Sausage Truck, an offshoot of the German Village restaurant founded in Columbus in 1886, will be on site, with 10% of its sales going to benefit the Pike Heritage Foundation. The featured food item will be a Stag Bar sandwich, a recipe that originated at the Emmitt House, the Waverly hotel and restaurant built in 1861 by businessman James Emmitt that stood as one of the Scioto Valley’s best-known landmarks until it was destroyed by fire in January 2014.
The Pike Heritage Foundation was incorporated on Aug. 10, 1983, and held its grand opening the following year. In 1992, the organization moved into its current home, a former German Evangelical Church built in 1859 and 1860, after the congregation that owned it, Waverly United Church of Christ, dissolved and gave the building to the foundation. The museum, located in Waverly’s Old Canal District, houses artifacts documenting Pike County’s history from its earliest settlement to the present, all drawn from local collections.
Organizers are encouraging residents to mark themselves as “going” on the Pike Heritage Foundation’s Facebook event page ahead of the festival.
