BAINBRIDGE, Ohio — A 62-year-old Waverly man died Monday afternoon when his car crossed the center line on state Route 41 in Paxton Township and struck an oncoming pickup truck, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Troopers from the patrol’s Chillicothe post were sent to the two-vehicle crash near milepost 2 after a report came in to the Jackson Communication Center at 4:13 p.m. Aug. 3, the patrol said in a media release.
Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Department crews were dispatched to the crash at 4:10 p.m. and arrived nine minutes later to find both vehicles with heavy damage, the fire department said in a Facebook post. Crews used mechanical means to free an occupant trapped in the wreckage.
Vernon Holbert, 62, of Waverly, was driving a 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo northwest on Route 41 when he failed to negotiate a curve, traveled left of center and struck a 2017 GMC Sierra driven by Kenton Weaver, 29, of Bainbridge, according to the patrol.
Holbert was pronounced dead at the scene. Weaver suffered minor injuries, and neither vehicle carried any other occupants, the patrol said. The Ross County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene, the fire department said.
The southbound side of Route 41 was closed for about three hours while troopers investigated. Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Department’s Engine 801, Engine 802 and Medic 816 responded to the crash, along with Paxton Township EMS, according to the two agencies.
The crash remains under investigation, the patrol said.
