WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — A 66-year-old driver and a 7-year-old passenger were killed Monday morning when their car was struck while turning left onto Calverts Lane from State Route 73 in Washington Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers from the Patrol’s Portsmouth Post responded to the two-vehicle crash at about 7:35 a.m. Monday, the Patrol said.

A preliminary investigation found a 2010 Hyundai Elantra, driven by Christina Madden, 66, of South Shore, Kentucky, was turning left from SR 73 onto Calverts Lane when it failed to yield and was struck by a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado traveling southbound on SR 73, according to the Patrol. The Silverado was driven by John Mahle Jr., 26, of Lucasville.

Madden and a passenger in her vehicle, 7-year-old Alannah Madden, died at the scene, the Patrol said.

Mahle was transported by Portsmouth Ambulance to Southern Ohio Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the Patrol.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Washington Township Fire Department, Portsmouth Emergency Ambulance Service, the Scioto County Coroner’s Office and the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office. The crash prompted a closure of SR 73/104 at Calverts Lane that lasted into the morning as crews investigated.

The crash remains under investigation by the Portsmouth Post.

The information contained in this story was obtained from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
