WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — A driver was flown to a hospital by medical helicopter Saturday night after the vehicle was struck hard in the driver’s side door during the demolition derby at the Fayette County Fair, according to Jefferson Township Fire & EMS.
Crews from multiple departments were working the derby at the Fayette County Fairgrounds when the crash happened, the department said in a Facebook post. Firefighters moved quickly to extricate the driver from the vehicle and transferred care to Fayette County EMS and Jeffersonville EMS.
Because of the severity of the impact, crews requested air medical transport. Members set up a landing zone at the fairgrounds so a flight crew could land and take off safely, the department said.
The demolition derby is one of the marquee events each year at the Fayette County Fair, held at the fairgrounds at 213 Fairview Ave. Jefferson Township Fire & EMS, a volunteer department based in Jeffersonville, covers the fairgrounds along with the rest of the township, responding to fires, crashes, medical emergencies and rescue calls.
The driver’s name, age and condition were not released. Jefferson Township Fire & EMS credited Fayette County EMS, Jeffersonville EMS and the flight crew for their work at the scene.
