CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — New details have been released in the discovery of human bones found in the Yoctangee Park Annex.

The Guardian broke the story this week of the grim discovery.

On Saturday, reports say, a man with his children were in the area of the boat ramp of the annex when one of them found what appeared to be a bone. In a statement provided to the Guardian, the man said his children located the bone.

“My kids screamed and said they found a jaw,” the man told police. He further stated that he originally “shrugged it off” but that was until he took a closer examination and realized it appeared to be a “jaw bone” with “human teeth” in it. That’s when the man called the police.

The Ross County Coroner and a K-9 unit from the Sheriff’s Office were sent to the area to assist in the investigation. The dog was used to search the area for any remaining bones that may have been looked over by police who responded to the area.

According to the coroner’s office, multiple bones were found, but only some may be human.

“I can confirm that there were bones found, not all of which were human,” said Mike Ratliff, chief investigator with the Ross County Coroner’s Office. “That area had flooded multiple times of recent so the origin of the bones could not be determined. All I can release at this time is that we are doing DNA and that the case is under investigation.”

Ratliff clarified that at least one bone appeared to be human and that is the bone undergoing DNA testing.

The case, authorities say, remains under investigation.
