ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — Authorities are warning individuals to be cautious of a new social media scam targeting investors interested in digital currency, following a report of a victim who lost $12,000 to an unknown female.

According to an investigative report, the victim met the female on Twitter, who identified herself as being from Romania and encouraged him to invest in Crypto through Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), a digital currency designed to work as a medium of exchange through a computer network that is not reliant on governments or banks.

After the victim invested $5,000, he was asked to pay fees, which he did, and then invested more money. The female canceled her Twitter account and instructed the victim to use WhatsApp to continue communication.

The victim paid additional fees and ultimately lost $12,000. The scammer then disappeared, leaving the victim with no means of recovering his funds.

Authorities warn individuals to be wary of unsolicited investment offers, especially those made through social media platforms, and to thoroughly research investment opportunities before making any financial commitments.
