CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Detectives with the Ross County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the grisly discovery of human remains along Cooks Hill Road, just south of Chillicothe on Thursday.

According to reports, mushroom hunters in the area near the Pixelle chemical facility stumbled upon what appeared to be a human skull. Detectives were called to the scene and initiated an investigation.

Officials say the remains were found within a wooded area, with the skull situated on top of the brush. Nearby, pants and a shirt were discovered next to a butane torch lighter. The clothing items included a size large blue t-shirt and size small black pants with a cupped bottom. Additional remains were also located.

At this time, it remains unclear how long the remains have been at the location and whether they belong to a male or female.

The remains have been transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for a forensic investigation.

The sheriff’s office has not released any further details regarding the case. Currently, Ross County has several unsolved missing persons cases still under investigation.
