CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Police in Chillicothe are investigating yet another shooting. This time on Fleet Street in which a dog was killed and a home was damaged.
According to authorities, a neighbor discovered the deceased male pit bull while feeding the owner’s dogs, while the owner was away fishing. The neighbor informed the owner’s girlfriend, who was asleep inside the residence. The neighbor also stated that a bullet hole was found in the exterior wall of the home.
The girlfriend, reports say, told officers that she heard gunfire around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, initially mistaking the noise for someone knocking on her back door. Realizing that the noise was gunfire, the woman said she laid on the floor until the sounds stopped. A bullet, officials said, entered the living room wall, hitting the ceiling fan’s light and cracking the TV screen.
The girlfriend alleged that two men were responsible for the shooting, as they had previously thrown beer bottles at the house. She did not hear any vehicles leaving the area, leading her to believe that the suspects were on foot.
Photos of bullet fragments inside the residence, the deceased dog in its kennel, and 9mm casings in the backyard were collected as evidence. Officers canvassed the area for video surveillance but found that most of the cameras either did not work or did not record the incident. One resident reported that their cameras captured audio of the shooting and may have video of vehicles in the area, while another resident said they would review their SD card and contact the police department if any video evidence is found.
Charges related to animal cruelty and improperly discharging a firearm into an occupied structure are being considered in connection with the case. The investigation is ongoing.
