PROCTORVILLE, Ohio — A Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and wounded Saturday night during a domestic violence incident that led to an hours-long standoff in Proctorville.
According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a domestic violence complaint at a residence on Township Road 1138 around 10:16 p.m. Upon arrival, a female inside the home reported that the suspect, identified as Charles Eugene Martin II, was intoxicated and brandishing a firearm.
When officers confronted Martin, he fired a shot, striking one of the deputies in the leg. The injured deputy returned fire, hitting the suspect. Following the exchange, officers retreated and surrounded the residence.
A standoff ensued for approximately two hours as deputies and officers from multiple departments worked to de-escalate the situation. Eventually, law enforcement regained entry into the home and apprehended Martin without further incident.
“I would like to thank the Deputies and our local law enforcement partners for their brave and heroic efforts,” said Sheriff Jeff Lawless. “This very serious incident was brought to conclusion in a safe and effective manner without further injuries.”
Martin sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He is currently in police custody and has been charged with felonious assault and attempted murder.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is on the scene investigating the incident. The injured deputy is receiving medical care, and no further information is available at this time.
