NEW YORK CITY, New York —The NYPD is asking for assistance from the public in locating a person of interest in the Dec. 4 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan. Investigators believe the incident was a premeditated and targeted attack, rather than a random act of violence.

Photos of the individual sought for questioning have been released, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

New details have emerged, with investigators revealing that shell casings recovered from the scene bore the words: “Deny, Defend, Depose.” Police have not provided further information about potential motives, as the investigation is ongoing.

The killing has prompted significant public reaction. On social media, discussions about the case have ranged widely, with some referencing recent reports on UnitedHealthcare’s business practices. According to a 2024 analysis by ValuePenguin, UnitedHealthcare had the highest in-network claim denial rate among major insurers, at 32%.
