MCARTHUR, Ohio — Authorities ordered an evacuation in parts of McArthur on Wednesday after a dangerous chemical leak at the Austin Powder Co. chemical plant, officials said.
The incident occurred at the facility located at 32000 Powder Plant Road in Vinton County, where hazardous fumes were observed emanating from the plant, according to local emergency services. The Vinton County Sheriff’s Office issued immediate evacuation orders for the surrounding area as a precaution.
Austin Powder Co., headquartered in Cleveland, is a leading manufacturer of industrial explosives and blasting solutions, primarily for mining, construction, and quarrying industries. Its Red Diamond facility in McArthur, established in 1930, produces a wide range of products, including dynamite, cast boosters, and detonating cord materials, and serves as the company’s core manufacturing plant in North America.
