CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Pixelle Specialty Solutions announced on June 10 that the Chillicothe paper mill, operational for over 200 years, will cease production by Aug. 10, impacting approximately 800 employees. The closure follows an April 18 statement from Sen. Bernie Moreno indicating the mill’s shutdown would be delayed until year’s end. Moreno has been engaging with workers and community leaders to represent their interests and urged affected Ohioans to contact his office for assistance.

Gov. Mike DeWine expressed disappointment, noting JobsOhio’s ongoing efforts to find a buyer for the site. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services is providing support to affected workers, with continued collaboration between local and federal partners. Mayor Luke Feeney described the closure as devastating but not unexpected, as the community had been bracing for the news since April. The city has launched Scioto Valley Forward, a website aimed at boosting the local economy and supporting the workforce, with a focus on aiding employees and their families while planning for the site’s future.

Mike Throne, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, outlined support for workers through SciotoValleyForward.com and a Workforce Hub at the main library annex. JobsOhio identified 4,500 job openings within a 45-minute radius, and automation and robotics training will soon be available. The chamber is working to transfer the 460-acre property to local control to guide its redevelopment for long-term prosperity. Community leaders and the chamber plan to ensure any new businesses at the site are sustainable, expressing optimism about Chillicothe’s future despite the loss of the historic papermaking business.
