A person of interest was quickly identified and was said to have fled the area. An active manhunt was launched for Jon-Erik Burrgraff. Deputies called for help from the Ohio Highway Patrol, who sent a half-a-dozen troopers to the area, including a K-9 unit. Initially, troopers asked for a helicopter to assist, but they were unable to fly due to the weather.

Aerial images showed a blue tent above the scene of the shooting with crime scene tape blocking the driveway.
