ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — Harrison Township in Ross County announced that they will be seeking a 3 mil levy this year.
In a statement posted online, the Harrison Township Fire Department explained why there is a need for this levy.
“3 mil” does not mean $3 million. In fact, the cost of the levy would be less than the price of a family meal per household, on average.
According to department officials, the volunteer fire department is not given a budget due to the decrease in township funds. The department went on to say, that the township has reached the point that they are no longer able to fund the fire department. The department is the only non-profit department in the entire county and has zero funding from the trustees.
Harrison Township reported that billing for EMS has helped financially, but it has not been enough to fully fund the department. The proposed levy would raise property taxes $35 per mil. The township believes residents will see the value in this small tax increase.
