KYIV, Ukraine— An American journalist was killed this weekend in Ukraine.
Brent Renaud, 50, was working in the country, covering the Russian conflict.
Reports say, his vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint. That is when Russian military forces opened fire on the journalist’s car, killing him and wounding others.
Ukrainian government officials confirmed the incident Sunday. At the time of his death, Renaud was on assignment for TIME magazine, covering the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
TIME Editor in Chief and CEO Edward Felsenthal and President and COO of TIME and TIME Studios Ian Orefice released a statement Sunday saying, “We are devastated by the loss of Brent Renaud. As an award-winning filmmaker and journalist, Brent tackled the toughest stories around the world, often alongside his brother, Craig Renaud. In recent weeks, Brent was in the region working on a TIME Studios project focused on the global refugee crisis. Our hearts are with all of Brent’s loved ones. It is essential that journalists are able to safely cover this ongoing invasion and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.”
Renaud had previously worked for several American media outlets, including HBO, NBC, and The New York Times.
