CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Residents, first responders, and members of the region’s law enforcement community stood in line to give blood today.
The drive, in honor of wounded Ross County hero Sgt. Eric Kocheran was deemed a success. The high turnout prompted the American Red Cross to extend the drive for a second day.
This follows last week’s deadly shooting at the Ross County Law Complex, where a lone gunman opened fire on Kocheran, leaving him in critical condition.
The Guardian spoke with members of law enforcement about today’s blood drive. Deputy Isaac Oberer of the Ross County Sheriff’s Office said that the shooting has impacted the entire community, but it has also brought everyone together. “I’m definitely here for Eric. He is a great guy and would give the shirt off his back.”
Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey also attended the drive, adding his office’s support for Kocheran and the community.
When asked about the recent shooting, Hafey said, “Tragedies like this, unfortunately, puts little towns on the map.” He went on to say, “This is one thing we as law enforcement train for. Some say that it could never happen, but then it does.”
Residents who still wish to donate blood can today until 6 p.m. or Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., or click here to book an appointment.
Stop by the American Red Cross South Central Ohio Chapter at 181 N. Bridge Street in Chillicothe to donate.
