PIKE COUNTY, Ohio — Additional details have been released in the shooting of a woman Wednesday morning in Pike County.
It happened at around 6:30 a.m.
According to reports, the woman was shot in a vehicle along the 15000 block of Route 772. The suspect, identified as Joseph Scowden, 40, pulled into a nearby recovery center. Dispatchers told responding deputies that the man was attempting to flee with the wounded woman.
Deputies arrived on the scene and held the man at gunpoint while medics were called to treat the woman. First responders say that she was suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.
Scowden, the authorities say, claimed the shooting was an accident.
He was arrested and transported to the Scioto County Jail, where he was charged with felonious assault, using a gun while intoxicated, and improper handling of firearms. He is also being held for “investigative custody.”
The exact events leading up to the shooting have not been released at this time.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, remains in critical condition.
