CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A shooting that left a 14-year-old teen wounded remains under investigation by detectives in Chillicothe. The incident happened in the early morning hours on Wednesday. According to the report provided by the Chillicothe Police Department, a group of teens was walking along Neal Avenue when a gunshot rang out.
Officers were immediately dispatched to the area after dispatchers received a call about someone who had been shot.
The victim, who was unconscious upon arrival by police, reports say, had suffered a gunshot to his right hip region. Witnesses who were with the teen told officers that they believed that he had accidentally shot himself while walking.
A female who was with the teens said they heard a shot and then turned to see the victim fall to the ground.
The gun, officers said, was not with the victim, and was believed to be in possession by one of the other teens walking with the victim. Residents in the area of Neal and Massie Avenues told investigators that they had heard a gunshot and came out and saw a group of juveniles.
The resident went on to say they “heard someone say something about someone being shot and they went to help.” They then reported that three juveniles ran passed their house, down Neal Avenue, toward Sugar Street.
The teen was transported to the Adena Regional Medical Center. His current condition has not been released at this time. Some of the other teens at the scene were also taken to the Ross County Law Complex for interviews with detectives.
The case, authorities say, remains under investigation. It is unknown at this time if the weapon has been recovered.
