GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio — On Sunday morning, January 29, 2023, the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office was called to respond to a residence on Hawthorne Lane in Springfield Township, on a report of a male who had brandished a firearm and was threatening to use it on himself. Upon arrival, deputies were able to speak with the individual, but he was uncooperative and barricaded himself in a second-story apartment.
The individual was able to be disarmed of the handgun he was known to have, but continued to refuse communication with deputies and expressed a desire to harm himself. To ensure the safety of all involved, irritant gas was deployed into the residence.
After a short period of time, the male began communication by phone and was able to be safely taken into custody. He is being provided care for a mental health crisis, according to Sheriff Matt Champlin. The incident ended peacefully with no reported injuries.
The individual’s name has not been released by the sheriff’s office at this time.
