PEEBLES, Ohio — An apparent suicide took place at the Serpent Mound historic site in southern Ohio, according to initial reports. The caretaker organization released a short statement on Facebook expressing their condolences and appreciation for visitors to treat the site, its staff members, and this occurrence with respect.
However, local Native Americans view the incident as a desecration of a sacred site linked to the ancient Siouan people. Philip Yenyo of the American Indian Movement of Ohio released a statement expressing his thoughts on the tragedy. “It has been confirmed that someone from out of town came to the Serpent Mound. This person sat in the mouth of the Serpent and committed suicide. This sacred site has now been desecrated,” Yenyo said in the statement.
The name of the individual and the exact circumstances have not been released at this time. Police are currently investigating the incident.
The Serpent Mound is a National Historic Landmark and is the largest surviving prehistoric effigy mound in the world. It is located in Adams County, Ohio.
