CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — A gun scare at Circleville Elementary brought a quick response from area law enforcement after an elementary student showed a handgun to other students on the school bus. The incident was reported to a staff member who quickly notified the school administration. The administration then contacted the Circleville Police Department to investigate the matter further. The incident, school officials said, was also reported by the family of a child on the bus who notified the police department.
Police say following an investigation, it was discovered that a fourth-grade student was in possession of a BB gun in their book bag. The BB gun was empty.
The BB gun, school officials said, was confiscated by law enforcement, and the child was removed from school property by family members. In an email, Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Halley said the “district takes all safety concerns very seriously, and appropriate consequences will be upheld for the actions mentioned above. “
The incident serves as a reminder to parents and guardians to regularly screen their child’s book bags for any items that should be kept at home and secured. It is also important to talk to children about notifying the proper authorities when they see dangerous items or situations.
Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Halley also thanked the Circleville Police Department, the District Transportation Department, and CES staff for their quick actions in handling the matter.
