WAVERLY, Ohio — The Waverly Police Department in Pike County has been awarded a substantial grant of approximately $50,000 as part of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s dedicated efforts to strengthen law enforcement agencies throughout the state. This allocation is a pivotal component of the Ohio First Responder Recruitment, Retention, and Resilience Program, a comprehensive initiative aimed at alleviating the strains of understaffing and job-related stress experienced by first responders.
Governor DeWine reaffirmed his unwavering support for first responders in a recent announcement, acknowledging their indispensable contribution to public safety. “Our commitment through this program is to ensure that our firefighters, EMTs, and law enforcement officers are equipped with the necessary resources to thrive both personally and professionally,” remarked Governor DeWine.
The Ohio First Responder Recruitment, Retention, and Resilience Program has effectively distributed an aggregate of approximately $35 million to benefit over 10,000 law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel hailing from 309 agencies statewide. Launched in 2022, the program stands as a direct response to the challenges of burnout and stress that often accompany the demanding responsibilities of first responders.
Under the administration of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, the program serves a dual purpose by supporting a variety of initiatives designed to address the unique mental, physical, and emotional health needs of first responders. In addition to providing incentives for personnel retention, the funding aids in recruitment endeavors, offsets onboarding and training expenses, and fosters engagement with young adults through explorer programs that promote careers within the first responder field.
The Ohio First Responder Recruitment, Retention, and Resilience Program is an integral part of the broader allocation of $250 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), earmarked by Governor DeWine and the Ohio General Assembly to assist first responders in navigating the multifaceted challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
