ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio — In a collaborative effort throughout January, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office joins forces with the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ohio Traffic Safety Office, and neighboring jurisdictions to intensify traffic enforcement. Starting on January 1st, 2024, and extending until January 31st, 2024, increased law enforcement presence aims to deter traffic offenses jeopardizing community safety.
As the holiday season approaches, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes crucial safety reminders for drivers:
- BUCKLE UP: Every person, every trip, every time. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the risk of fatal injuries by 45%, making it a life-saving practice.
- STOP SPEEDING: Speeders, numbering around 63.6 million drivers nationwide, contribute to a dangerous environment on the roads. Combat aggression and prevent fatalities by adhering to speed limits.
- AVOID DISTRACTED DRIVING: With approximately 660,000 drivers using electronic devices at any given moment, distracted driving poses a lethal threat. Stay focused and don’t let distractions, like emojis, compromise your safety.
- DRIVE SOBER: Even a single alcoholic beverage warrants responsible choices. Designate a sober driver or plan alternative transportation options. Law enforcement maintains zero tolerance for those who choose to drink and drive.
