ATHENS, Ohio — In collaboration with the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ohio Traffic Safety Office, and neighboring jurisdictions, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office has initiated a month-long traffic enforcement operation aimed at promoting road safety. The enforcement, which commenced on Monday, is scheduled to persist through January 31, encompassing an intensified law enforcement presence on streets, county roads, and highways to discourage traffic offenses that jeopardize community safety.
As the holiday season ends, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office says the significance of adhering to crucial safety practices while driving is important. The following safety tips have been emphasized for all motorists:
- BUCKLE UP: Every person, for every journey, every time. Wearing a seatbelt can be the decisive factor between life and death, reducing the risk of a fatal injury by 45%.
- STOP SPEEDING BEFORE IT STOPS YOU: With approximately 63.6 million speeding drivers nationwide, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the dangers of aggressive and high-speed driving, underscoring its lethal consequences.
- AVOID DISTRACTED DRIVING: Acknowledging the pervasive issue of distracted driving, the Sheriff’s Office warns against the use of electronic devices while behind the wheel. At any given moment, an estimated 660,000 drivers are engaged with electronic devices, contributing to the epidemic.
- DRIVE SOBER: Even minimal alcohol consumption warrants caution. Motorists are advised to designate a sober driver or arrange for alternative transportation options. Law enforcement will exercise zero tolerance for those who choose to drink and drive.
