CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A man is in critical condition following a near-drowning incident in an above-ground pool on June 28. It happened at a residence in the 1000 block of Lake Drive.
According to the Chillicothe Police Department, first responders arrived to find the individual lying on the ground outside the pool in the backyard. Rescue crews said the man’s body was cool to the touch, and he was taking agonal breaths with blood coming from his nose and mouth.
A resident stated that the man had been swimming on the east side of the pool when she noticed him lying at the bottom. Initially thinking he was joking, she soon realized he had been underwater for an extended period, estimating it to be up to 10 minutes. Another individual present reportedly pulled the man from the pool and began CPR.
Chillicothe medics arrived on the scene and transported the individual to Adena Regional Medical Center (ARMC).
A law enforcement officer later contacted ARMC medical staff and was informed that the individual was being flown to either Riverside or Grant for treatment of an anoxic brain injury.
The incident remains under investigation, police said alcohol could have been a factor in the incident.
