COLUMBUS, Ohio — United Parcel Service (UPS) will eliminate 20,000 jobs and close 164 facilities in 2025, driven by new or increased tariffs under President Donald Trump and a sharp reduction in Amazon deliveries.
Announced in UPS’s first-quarter earnings report on April 29, 2025, the cuts raise concerns for Ohio, where UPS operates over 40 hubs, customer centers, airport facilities, and railroad operations.
Scope of Layoffs and Closures
The layoffs impact about 4% of UPS’s global workforce of 490,000, including 330,000 Teamsters-represented U.S. jobs. By June 2025, 73 leased and owned buildings will close, with 164 total closures expected by year-end. The “Network Reconfiguration and Efficiency Reimagined” initiative, set to conclude in 2027, is projected to save $3.5 billion in 2025, according to the earnings report.

Economic Context
The layoffs and closures reflect broader trade disruptions from Trump’s tariffs, compounding challenges like reduced shipping demand. UPS’s cost-cutting measures signal industry-wide adjustments to economic pressures.
