CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Ross County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man early Monday after a tense standoff at his Chillicothe home, where he had barricaded himself, threatened suicide, and claimed to have placed Tannerite explosives at entry points, authorities said.

The incident began late Sunday when deputies responded to a call about a suicidal male on Narrows Road. The caller, identified as the girlfriend of Logan Allerding, reported that Allerding was intoxicated, depressed, and had barricaded himself inside their residence at 633 Charleston Pike. The woman told dispatch that Allerding threatened to shoot Tannerite, a binary explosive, if law enforcement approached, according to a sheriff’s report.

Deputies and Springfield EMS staged at a nearby Corner Market, and Narrows Road was blocked off for safety. A neighboring family of 12 was evacuated due to the explosion risk. The woman, who had left the residence at Allerding’s insistence, said he had been drinking heavily, recently lost his job, and was under significant stress. She reported seeing Allerding mix Tannerite and place jars by the doors, raising fears he might harm himself or others. The woman also mentioned hearing gunshots over the phone earlier, consistent with a Highland County Sheriff’s Office alert about a motorcyclist firing shots near a Dollar General.

Deputy Luke Ramsey made phone contact with Allerding around 1:10 a.m. Monday. Allerding, initially cooperative, said he was on his porch smoking and had no intention of hurting himself or others. He denied having firearms on him but admitted to having guns in a safe and Tannerite “all over the house,” though he claimed it was unmixed and secure. After negotiations, Allerding agreed to meet deputies at his driveway.

Sergeant Jacob Riege and Deputy Ramsey approached the residence with the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team nearby. Allerding, visibly unarmed with hands raised, was patted down, handcuffed, and arrested for inducing panic. A 9mm bullet was later found in his pocket during a jail pat-down, deputies said. He was transported to Ross County Jail and placed on suicide watch without incident.

A friend of Allerding’a briefly visited the residence to de-escalate the situation and reported seeing four jars of Tannerite by the doors. The friend said he took a pistol from Allerding before leaving.

On Monday, deputies secured a search warrant for the residence. Detectives found several firearms, Tannerite, and a greyish-white powder on a kitchen table, all collected as evidence, according to Deputy Roderic Dutcher.

The case has been forwarded to Highland County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation related to the reported Dollar General shooting. Allerding’s current status at the jail was not immediately available.
