COLUMBUS, Ohio — Veterans, students, and civic leaders gathered Wednesday on the historic grounds of Fort Hayes to honor three Ohio airmen killed in Iraq. The wreath‑laying ceremony, organized by the Air Force Junior ROTC OH‑871 and the Columbus Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, paid tribute to Capt. Seth R. Koval, Capt. Curtis J. Angst, and Master Sgt. Tyler H. Simmons of the Rickenbacker 121st Air Refueling Wing.

Cadets from OH‑871 presented the colors and performed a formal flag‑folding as World War II reenactors stood nearby, linking generations of service. SMSgt Eduard Dedousis narrated the program, and DAR Regent Cynthia Lucius spoke about the enduring legacy of sacrifice. Chaplain Joyce Hahnert offered prayers for the fallen and their families.

Music filled the air as Bloom Audio Consultants managed the sound for performances by vocalist Janeen Holmes of the Ladies of the Lincoln and the Columbus Police and Fire Pipes and Drums. Marine veteran Chris Martin’s rendition of “Taps” closed the ceremony in silence and reflection.

The event drew support from Gold Star Mothers, Blue Star Mothers, the American Legion, and the Order of the Military Purple Heart Auxiliary. More than fifty DAR members, including state officers and local chapter regents, attended to reaffirm their commitment to patriotism and education. Organizers credited U.S. Navy Seabee veteran Jamie Lee Finney for coordinating the program.

After the ceremony, families of the fallen — Heather Koval, Mary Angst, and Mylo and Cheryl Simmons — joined community members for a reception hosted by the JROTC Boosters. For them, and for all who attended, the wreaths laid at Fort Hayes stood as symbols of remembrance and gratitude — reminders that the cost of freedom is carried by those who serve and the loved ones who continue to honor their memory.
