DELAWARE COUNTY, Ohio — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium was evacuated Tuesday morning after a phone threat reported to the Zoo’s call center prompted a large law enforcement response. Officials now say the threat has been cleared, but the Zoo will remain closed for the rest of the day.

According to Zoo officials, the call came in at 9:54 a.m. reporting a potential active‑shooter threat. In coordination with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Zoo leadership immediately ordered a full evacuation of guests and staff.

“In light of similar threats reported at several zoos across the country in recent days, and a recent safety threat at the Zoo on Saturday, May 2, 2026, this step was taken to help ensure the safety of everyone on our grounds,” the Zoo said in a statement. Officials emphasized that “all guests, staff, and animals are safe.”

At 11:40 a.m., the Zoo announced that the threat had been cleared by law enforcement and Zoo security. All guests had been evacuated, and the facility will stay closed for the remainder of the day as authorities continue assessing the situation.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office remains on site, maintaining a secured perimeter while working alongside Zoo security teams. Officials say they are following established safety protocols and will continue coordinating with law enforcement.

“We appreciate the swift response of our partners, as well as the cooperation of our guests and team members,” the Zoo said.

Updates will be posted on the Zoo’s website at columbuszoo.org/community-update.
