HILLSBORO, Ohio — A Chillicothe man is facing an OVI charge after leading a Highland County sheriff’s deputy on a brief pursuit that ended in Ross County over the weekend, according to the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy patrolling Madison Township tried to stop a vehicle in the 100 block of Jefferson Street on Aug. 23, the sheriff’s office said. The vehicle did not stop and continued east on state Route 28 into Ross County before coming to a stop a short time later near Blaine Lane, deputies said. The driver, identified as Wyatt C. Swackhammer, 20, of Chillicothe, was charged with OVI and underage consumption. A passenger, Jasmyne R. Smithberger, 19, of Circleville, was charged with underage consumption.
Also on Aug. 23, deputies responded to a report of a large fight in the 3100 block of Neal Road. Following an investigation, two people were charged with underage consumption: Corlee M. Akers, 20, of Hillsboro, and Levi J. Smallwood, 18, of Sardinia.
The sheriff’s office also reported two incidents from Aug. 22. A resident of the 11000 block of Karnes Road reported the theft of a vehicle, which remains under investigation. A deputy also responded to a trespassing complaint in the 2500 block of state Route 134, and a Sardinia woman was ordered off the property following an investigation.
Ian C. Kroneberg, 30, of Hillsboro, was cited for an improper turn, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies, along with fire and EMS crews, responded to 97 calls for service in Highland County over the two-day period, including 63 law enforcement calls, 29 EMS runs and five fire calls, according to the sheriff’s office. The Highland County Jail held 45 inmates as of Aug. 23 — 34 men and nine women.
Suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
