COLUMBUS, Ohio — Democrat lawmakers in Ohio have written a bill that would legalize recreational marijuana sales and cultivation in the state.
Representatives Casey Weinstein, of Hudson, and Terrence Upchurch, of Cleveland, have drafted the bill.
In a recent interview, Weinstein said, “We’re seeing there are dramatic economic benefits, there are medical benefits and there’s a strong criminal justice avenue here so we can focus law enforcement on violent crime,”.
So what would the bill do if it became law? According to Weinstein, adults that are 21 years of age or older could buy and possess up to five ounces of marijuana, and grow up to 12 plants for personal use,”.
Marijuana legalization has had a tough battle in the Buckeye State. In 2015 Ohioans voted on the proposed amendment to the state’s constitution that would have legalized marijuana. That amendment failed with over 60% of people voting against the amendment.
House Bill 210 drafted by Rep. Terrence Upchurch and Sedrick Denson allowing marijuana possession and cultivation has yet to be heard on the House floor.
