CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — A controversial traffic stop involving a police K-9 in Circleville has a new development.
On July 4, during a highway stop due to a missing mudflap, Jadarrius Rose, a truck driver, was attacked by a police dog even as he attempted to surrender. He was charged Highway patrol video reveals Rose standing with his hands raised when a K-9 handler was forcefully instructed, “Do not release the dog.” However, the Belgian Malinois was let loose, eventually targeting Rose.
While Rose originally faced felony charges for failing to comply with officers, these charges were dropped. But the Guardian has uncovered court documents that show as of September 26, Rose has been charged with a misdemeanor version of the offense and currently has an active warrant for his arrest.
Ryan Speakman, the officer who handled the dog, has been terminated from the Circleville police department. The decision follows his inability to be “a good officer.”
The warrant is only good for the state of Ohio and as long as Rose, who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, stays away from the Buckeye State, he won’t see handcuffs for the charge.
His lawyers did not immediately return calls on Monday seeking comment. A civil rights lawsuit that is expected has yet to be filed.
