JEFFERSONVILLE, Ohio — A serious crash involving multiple vehicles shut down Interstate 71 southbound, just south of the rest area in Fayette County, authorities reported Wednesday afternoon.
The accident, which occurred around 4:15 p.m., involves several rolled vehicles and a collision with an 18-wheeler, according to initial reports. Units arriving on the scene confirmed that the interstate is completely closed in the southbound direction to accommodate emergency response efforts.
Medical helicopters were dispatched to the scene to transport critically injured individuals, while multiple ground medical units are en route to provide additional support. The number of injuries and the extent of damage are not yet confirmed.
The Sheriff reported the highway was closed for more than two hours.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as authorities work to clear the scene and provide medical assistance to those involved. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
